This world is called ‘Newspaper’ because it is printed in thin black ink on yellowed paper. In the year 118 after the prophet Adanōs won the fealty of the Magi at Tanthes, an Empire was founded at Panarine spanning nearly the whole of Ōchis from east to west. The Empire was always destined to fall, and it was always destined to be hated in its existence, and glorified after its fall. In short, the world exists in the aftermath of the horrors of empire, as new polities rise and fall. The feel ranges from baroque through Napoleonic to the European interbellum. The people of this world are proud of what histories they define their cultures by. In other words, the Empire falls, but the Empire remains. The great colonial empires were repelled before their height by the prevalence of magic, a force wielded in government agencies, in mystical lodges, and on the war-torn fronts. The soul is real, measurable on the radio spectrum, and as well-understood as the mind– which is to say, barely. If one can confirm the existence of demons, what does that say about God?
